When you are buying a new PC computer, you may have noticed that one of the features/specifications include something called RAM. For someone who is not familiar with the internal workings of PC computers, PC computer RAM is a mystery. Actually, RAM is an acronym for ‘random access memory’ and is essential for the operation of your PC computer.

PC computer RAM, also known as volatile memory, is used by your PC computer in order to store information that will be processed by the CPU, or central processing unit. The random access memory in your PC computer stores information in memory cells arranged in a grid. This grid can be compared to a spreadsheet in which all the data is stored. Your PC computer’s processor accesses the data at random as needed to carry out the processes required by software being run on your system.

Occasionally, people confuse their hard drive with RAM. The hard drive is simply a storage system for the data on your PC computer – the software you run as well as the documents and files you store. The information on your hard drive cannot be accessed at random. When information from the hard drive needs to be accessed, entire blocks of data are transferred to the RAM. Once the information is in the PC computer’s RAM, it is randomly accessed used by the processor as needed.

Whenever you shut your PC computer down, all of the information that is in the random access memory is deleted. So the RAM of your PC computer is only like a temporary storage system that works in conjunction with your PC computer’s processor to perform functions requested by software on your PC computer. The more RAM a program requires for operation, the slower your PC computer operates when running that program.

However, you can ensure that your PC computer RAM is working at its full potential by taking care to perform a few maintenance tasks. One of these tasks is to regularly empty the recycle bin. You should also uninstall or delete any programs and files that you do not need.

It is also helpful to defragment your PC computer every so often. This is a simple procedure that can be run easily. Just go to the ‘Start’ menu, click ‘All Programs’, choose ‘Accessories’, then ‘System Tools’, and the ‘Disk Defragmenter’. And you are all set – allow the program to run until completion.

If you are on the Internet frequently, be sure to clear your browser’s history regularly and also the temporary Internet files. These tasks can normally be performed from within whatever browser you are using by selecting ‘Tools’ and then appropriate subsequent options.

If you run a lot of programs that are resource hogs (require a lot of RAM), then you should also consider adding more random access memory to your PC computer. You should notice that the programs run more quickly and smoothly once extra RAM has been added.

RAM is an essential component for making sure that your PC computer operates at its peak. Not having enough RAM will cause your PC computer to behave erratically. Understanding how your PC computer RAM affects the operation of your PC computer is helpful in making sure that your PC computer has all the resources it needs for proper functioning.

April is the time that PC computer manufacturers and other high-tech industries announce their first quarter (Q1) results. The numbers for 2009 do not bode well for sales of new machines, but may indicate a boost in the secondary computer market.

First – the numbers.

PC Shipments Decrease Around the World

Research firm Gartner released its report on 2009 Q1 global shipments of computers on April 15. According to Gartner, global shipments have dropped 6.5% compared to the same time in 2008. Researchers at IDC had a slightly higher number, saying that the drop was actually 7.1%.

Both reports note that PC computer sales in the U.S. were stronger than the global average, but still nothing to celebrate. As Gartner’s research director, George Shiffler noted: “We are seeing some evidence of channel inventory restocking, particularly in the U.S… This restocking should not be interpreted as a recovery in PC end-user demand; it’s still unclear if the global PC market has hit the bottom.”

In other words, the sales drop is real and may continue. Especially as the economy goes down, this will start to affect used computer sales.

So, what does any of this have to do with used computers?

The Secondary Market for PC Computers and Parts

The last research I could find on the secondary computer market dates back to 2005. At that time, the talk was about the strength of the secondary market. While I have no new research to back up this assertion, I think that the current drop in new PC sales shows how robust the secondary market is. Businesses may be putting off new purchases, but they still need to service and augment their current network infrastructure and for those functions, the used market is ideal.

Instead of new equipment, many are relying on the secondary market to provide them with fully functional used laptops and desktops. In this era of cost cutting and eco-angst, “used” does not have the negative connotation it once did.

One reason for this change in attitude is that, when it comes to technology, “used” is often synonymous with “refurbished.” Refurbished machines are tested, cleaned up and restored to the original manufacturer’s specifications. Translation – they perform as well or better than an equivalent new machine. Even some major “primary” retailers sell refurbished units, so demand must be worth the effort of acquiring, restoring and stocking these items.

The secondary market is also the place to go for affordable part and components that are no longer available from the manufacturer. Again, sales of these items may be having an impact on new computer sales. Instead of trashing an old machine, many people are choosing to upgrade their existing computer with more memory or bigger hard drives.

The bottom line? PC computer sales may be down on the primary side of the market, but if researchers were to update their studies on the secondary market, they would very likely find a different and more positive story.

The keyboard is among the most underappreciated and taken for granted component of the Personal Computer (PC) that we use everyday.

We are all creatures of habit. We generally use certain keys and not others in certain way.

What are the origins and history of the now current accepted PC computer keyboard?

Interestingly enough the standard keyboard layout did not originate in one fell swoop. It developed through three separate IBM keyboard projects and often involved mistakes and pitfalls along its evolutionary path.

Most keyboard setups have their direct origin in the original IBM keyboard – “The IBM Enhanced 101 Key Keyboard “which IBM set as the standard in the year of 1987. The Enhanced Keyboard was not the first but rather IBM’s third keyboard standard for PCs.

What were these previous frameworks of IBM keyboard models?

First the original IBM PC and XT keyboards had 83 keys. There were 10 function keys on the left side of the keyboard, a combined number pad and a cursor pad placed on the right hand side. The now called Control (Ctrl), Left Shift, and Alt keys were arranged in a line next to the function keys.

The Escape (Esc) as we know it was to the left of the numbers in the top row. To the right of the Right Shift Key, an unshifted asterisk key allowed the user to type the now common . without acrobatics. Between the tiny Left Shift key and the Zee key was a Backslash / Vertical key. The Enter key was narrow and vertically aligned and very easy to miss by most early PC users.

The design of this original IBM keyboard standard was a mixture of sensible and absurd keyboard layout decisions so much so that the admired components overshadowed the less thought out shortcomings and thus here we are today.

IBM’s next design was the original AT keyboard. This was somehow made incompatible with the earlier PC/XT design but a calculating user could reprogram in essence the newer keyboard to work.

The AT keyboard again had the then accepted ten function keys on the left, but exiled the Esc and the unshifted asterisk to the number pad. The Enter key was L-shaped and the Backsplash key, which now occupied the spot which used to be the left half of the Backspace key. Was reduced in size to the width of a single “alpha” key.

At some point when market forces pushed IBM to upgrade the venerable AT computer, it introduced the Enhanced model keyboard which was compatible with the original AT model, but had a drastically different layout. The ESC key and the 12 function keys were now along the top, the number pad was moved to the right. And a new cursor pad was placed between the alpha keys a number pad. The cursor pad ( which was actually split into two sets of keys ) consisted of four arrow keys in an inverted T at the bottom and a separate bank of 6 keys at the top: Ins ( Insert) , Del (Delete) , Home and End, and PgUp (Page up_ and PgDn ( Page down) .

What happened is that the computer users of the time disastrously started to press the Delete key when they meant end. There was virtually little memory, by today’s standards’ hence no advanced features of rescue that we take for granted today. A computer user who may have spent hours typing a major endeavor such as master’s thesis may have seen his hard work disappear into never never land.

It did not take too long for the complaints to arrive at IBM head office to rectify the situation. “Leave well enough alone “was the refrain. And the Backspace key returned to its original double width. The backslash key now occupied a single row. Caps lock migrated to the old side of the Ctrl key, and twin Ctrl and Alt keys flanked the spacebar.

The Del key though remained in its now current place although in some keyboards it is now double sized.

Like it or not this layout has become the standard by which we live with our computer enhanced lives.

The keyboard is among the most underappreciated and taken for granted component in our every day computer lives. We seldom stop to think why certain keys are laid out in the given way. Like it or not we owe a debt to thoughtfulness and thoroughness of the original IBM PC project engineers.
